It always amazes me how some of life’s most important lessons are taught to us through our kids. Funny thing how that works. I learned something big this week and it all started with a little snow globe …
You see, Bella wanted a snow globe. She'd wanted one for months and had an uncanny sixth sense in finding them everywhere we were - at Kroger, the Disney Store, Target - you name it and if we'd been there, she'd found a snow globe there. With every discovery came the renewed petition of "Mommy, please can I get one? Please?" Her desire only intensified during Christmas at my mom’s house where the girls found the mother of all snow globes – it was BIG, it played music, and their were twinkle lights. Amazing! So as Valentine's Day came along and I found these cute little Valentine's snow globes, I knew she'd be over the top excited about them.
Upon finding her snow globe on Valentine's morning placed atop her plate, she reacted as only Bella can – she sang, she danced, she twirled – it was quite a sight to see. She couldn't stop touching it, shaking it, and just playing with it. Those months of wanting were finally over and she finally had a snow globe of her very own! As can be the case with kids (we all know playing gently can only last so long), she became a little overzealous the more she played with the globe, which of course I then asked her to put the snowglobe back on her plate.
Well, being an overly excited 4 year-old, she didn’t quite jump to put the globe back right away. Instead she continued dancing around with it, ultimately grabbing Sophie's as well and then banging (yes I said banging) them together. In an instant, her globe's glass was broken, the water and glitter were all over the floor, and there was one mortified little girl standing in our kitchen.
She was despondent. Gut. Wrenching. Sobs.
To help calm her down, Nate scooped her up off the couch and carried her into another room to talk about what had happened. She told him that she was sad it was broken, but that the worst part was that it broke because she hadn’t listened (in fact, while she was talking to Nate, through sobs she told him "I didn't choose the right!" - sad to hear her say that, but at least she's listening to FHE lessons).
After she calmed down we continued with our Valentine’s festivities, but after putting the kids to bed that night I just couldn't stop thinking about what had happened. Nate and I spent some time discussing what we should do about it – should we get a new snow globe or should we let this be a learning experience about the consequences that follow certain behaviors? Nate was pretty convinced that it would be best not to get a new snow globe that this would be a good teaching moment, but as much as I tried to agree I just felt too bad for her – especially because she felt so terrible about the way it happened.
I saw my sweet little girl who always makes good choices, who always listens, who always does the right thing (no kidding...she is such an angel) make one poor choice and all the cards came tumbling down. It made me stop and think about the meat and potatoes of the whole concept.
We are given rules to live by...to make us happy...and we do everything we can to follow these rules but sometimes we just come up short. Without mercy, justice precludes us from many eternal blessings. But thankfully Heavenly Father sent His son to pay the price for our shortcomings. This allows mercy to take effect and allows us forgiveness and happiness which otherwise would not be possible.
These thoughts stayed with me through the night and the next morning I described to Nate how I was feeling. We couldn’t pass up this opportunity with the girls to demonstrate such great eternal truths and hopefully make an impact in their minds on the importance of Jesus Christ. Together we began planning an FHE that would revolve around the broken snow globe.
That night when we told the girls it was time for FHE, they were excited - what they didn’t realize was how excited mommy and daddy were about it as well. Ha ha.
We began the lesson with a general discussion about choosing the right and consequences. It actually led perfectly into the events of the day before, and we asked Bella about the snow globe. As she talked about it she started to cry (but she didn’t want us to know she was crying so wiped her eyes and told us “my eyes are kind of tired” – so cute!), she got especially emotional when she said she felt sad she didn’t listen. While all I wanted to do was grab her and hug her, we let the emotion of the moment hang there before we started talking about Jesus.
We talked about His mission, His death and resurrection, and how we can obtain forgiveness. Both girls were engrossed in the conversation and were contributing – even little Sophie – as we talked about receiving God’s Mercy by repenting, thanks to Jesus Christ (of course all of this was in 2 and 4 year-old speak).
Finally, we got back to the snow globe – the spark that ignited this whole discussion. We acknowledged that what Bella did was wrong, that she should have listened and been more careful, but then we acknowledged how she felt – that she was very sorry and that she was seeking forgiveness.
With that I pulled out the new snow globe.
When she saw the new little orb her eyes lit up like two little bright stars! And all I can say was that we all felt a little bit of the joy. Who knew such a seemingly small event could become such a big moment spiritually for our family.
Thank you little snow globe. Thank you Jesus.

Valentine's Day
With the girls in our house outnumbering the boys 3 to 1 (or I guess only 3 to 2 if you count the cat), I'm sure you can guess how we feel about Valentines Day - what girl doesn't love a day devoted to hearts, flowers, pink, chocolates, and of course LOVE! It doesn't matter how old or young, Valentines was made for the girly girls among us, and let's bet honest, there are 3 of those in our house.
We celebrated Valentines a day early this year because Daddy was going to be gone on the day itself until around the girls' bedtime, so on Sunday afternoon we had our traditional celebration. Growing up my mom always set the table with a variety of heart plates and we enjoyed breakfast for dinner, so we've continued that tradition with the girls, and since breakfast food (i.e. anything with syrup) is just about their favorite thing in the whole world, it turns out fantastic. When the girls woke up on Sunday morning they found the table all decorated with a festive tablecloth, the heart plates, hearts hanging from the lights above the table - need I even say they were excited? You would have thought Santa Claus had visited from their excited reactions - and I guess in a way he had, because also as a Valentines tradition, everyone had a wrapped gift under their plate on the table.
Now it was almost too much to bear for them to see such a beautifully pink and hearted sight and have to hold off until after church to attack it, but they managed, staring longingly at it from across the room. As we drove home from church Sophie yelled from the backseat, "It's Valentines Day! It's Valentines Day!" By the time we got home, we were ready for the festivities.
In addition to the little presents under their plates, we also got each of the girls a Valentines snowglobe and had placed it on their plates. Bella has been dying to have a snowglobe for months, and these cute little orbs were perfect for them. As the first act of the afternoon the girls snatched up their globes and began playing. They were so excited to have them in their hands that they weren't playing as gently as they should have and even though Nate and I warned Bella repeatedly, she began knocking the globes together watching the little hearts dance in the liquid. Well, to be succinct, her snowglobe broke, or perhaps better said, burst all over the floor. She was devasted. Almost inconsolable. After months of desire she finally had a snowglobe only to see it destroyed before her eyes. It took us a few minutes to restore the Valentines cheer, but luckily we did, and this little experience actually turned into a nice teaching moment (more on that in the next post).
Finally, dinner, or ummm breakfast, was ready and we sat down to eat. Before digging into our feast of heartshaped pancackes and ham/cheese omelets, we opened our presents. The girls got some princess toys, Nate got a Kenutcky hoodie (a must now that we're official Wildcats), and I got a new toy for my camera :).
Too bad Valentines only comes once a year!
This next sequence of pictures is hiliarious - I just snapped away as the girls interacted with one another and I'm amazed I got the whole sequence of events, but it is classic. Both girls smiling, then laughing, then Sophie deciding to poke Bella's eye (not surprising), then Bella not happy she got her eye poked, then Sophie laughing because she poke Bella's eye, and then Sophie giving Bella a kiss to say sorry.
I wish I could say this was a unique event, but it pretty much follows the standard course repeateded several times a day.

Here we go...

With Bella turning 5 this year (oh where did my baby go?), I've been counting down - in a not so excited way - to August when she starts kindergarten. I'm just not sure I'm ready to let her go, but I have plenty of time until then, right? Well, it seemed so far away until today - Kindergarten REGISTRATION. Yes it's only February, but Bella is now officially registered and the much anticipated day in August is sure starting to feel very close.
Registration in Kentucky is a big deal, and quite frankly I've been a little stressed about it. The morning of registration at the elementary school is a lot like the morning of a new iPhone release at the Apple store - people show up hours before registration opens, lines form, numbers are given out to identify your place in line, and of course the uneasy feeling of wondering if you are going to be one of the lucky ones to get it! You see classes fill up on a first come, first served basis, so even though we live only a couple of block away from the school, if I don't register Bella early enough, she have to be bused across town to a school that has room. Who knew it could be so cut-throat!
Following the sage advice of some school saavy friends (thanks Jennie!!), I arrived at registration about TWO HOURS before it opened and took the coveted first spot in line! The office ladies looked at me like I was crazy when I walked in ready for registration at 7:00 AM - and I almost agreed with them - until the line began to form behind me. As more and more anxious parents filed into line, I became less nervous as I held the "#1" card, knowing the Bella would be the first registered. The wait ended up not being too bad either as I sat back in one of the only comfy little chairs (good thing I was there early to get one), played games on my iphone and chatted with other eager moms.
As I sat there I took in all the hustle and bustle of elementary school life, the kids and teachers coming and going, the smell of fresh pencils and old library books, the happy and tired little faces eager for a new day of possiblities and I realized how much I missed this little scene. I loved school when I was little - and I loved it when I taught. And now here I am as a parent and I'm excited for Bella to be in school and love it as well. That still doesn't mean that I'm ready to let go, but at least I know she's going to love it!
Sandersville Elementary here we come. Go SHARKS!
P.S. Stay tunned for other Valentine news...coming...hopefully tonight. Ha ha.

Little Bits of Love
Oh, Valentines Day - the day of love, chocolate dipped strawberries, candies, date nights, sweet little gifts, heart pancakes, red and pink, I love you's, a few extra pounds (ha ha) and...
HEART CRAYONS!!
In the grand tradition of passing out valentines at preschool parties, the girls and I make these colorful little gems to give out each year (something a little different from the normal candy). With the girls old enough to help unwrap the crayons, break them into little pieces and help put them in the mold, we spent a couple of mornings creating these little beauties. We started making these crayons a few years ago after I saw the idea in FamilyFun magazine and the tradition has stuck!
Every year we try to mix it up a bit and create unique ways to deliver our little treasures. This year I found a darling little design from Melissa Davis (Girl Valentines Collection for $7.11 during her 48 hour sale!!), which I modified a tad to go with our hearts.
Here is how you can make your own!!
- Unwrap crayons (although in our house by this time of year most of our new crayons from the beginning of school have somehow mysteriously unwrapped themselves).
- Break crayons into pieces (a fun way is to put them into a bag and smash outside).
- Place crayon pieces into mold, making sure to place multiple colors in each mold.
- Bake in oven at 250 degrees for 10-15 minutes. Leave in mold until solid.
And then here they are finished! Ready to color some love!

Snowy Valentines
We had plans today.
We woke up this morning (somewhat lazily, but that's the best way! :)
Ate a quick breakfast.
Got dressed - probably should have showered...but what's another day right?
Opened the door to start the day and found...this.
Snowflakes! And not just any run of the mill snowflakes, but BIG, FLUFFY snowflakes! The kind that seem to glide weightlessly through the air.
So000ooo, needless to say, our plans changed. Who wants to go run errands (milk and bread aren't important anyway) when you can stay home and watch the snow fall, all cozy and warm inside?!
Not little ol' me! Creating our own impromptu snow day, we pulled out the sparkly Valentine stickers and hearts that have been taunting the girls eversince we bought them in the dollar section at Target. Love love LOVE the dollar section. I saved them for just such a day as this.
But before we could start any art projects, there was one thing we had do - DANCE in the snow! I'll let you guess who's idea this was (and I'll give you a hint, her name rhymes with rella - haha, no surprise there - that girl loves to dance, and Sophie's not far behind!).
I promise...they were only out there for two seconds! Ha ha. And check out Bella's shoes - they maybe perfect for a dancing princess, but snow worthy? Not so much...

After our toes were sufficiently frosted, we started in on our sweet little love notes! Shhh...they are supposed to be a surprise! =) The girls dove right in, finding the letters for each special Valentine and excitedly sticking each one to their supposed spot. Adding their own unique flare with hearts and swirly crayon doodles to each masterpiece, they were quite pleased with the results. Such sweet little artists!
Dancing in the snow - check. Awesome valentine craft - check. What could be left for the day? More SNOW! I couldn't believe how fast it came down! Since by this time the girls' toes had completely defrosted, they decided it was time to go to the backyard and check on the cat. You see, Boober was kind of exiled to the great outdoors when he started using our towels as litter boxes so we check on him when the weather gets crazy. He doesn't necessarily get to come inside when its cold out, but he does have a nice warm dog house to keep him safe and dry. So while Bella was checking on the cat, Sophie was doing this...
Yep. That's right, she's eating snow. At least it wasn't yellow! Ha ha.
Check out the snowflakes! Aren't they huge!? You could feast on those babies!
Ready for the warmth again, we came back inside and the girls got right back to business, deciding they weren't quite done with their valentines.
And here are some of the finished product!! Totally cute, right?!
Check your mailboxes in a few days...some love notes are on their way!

iPhone
So...I got an iPhone for Christmas.
Best present ever.
And now our mornings look a little like this...
Mom passes iPhone to girls and goes back to bed. Glorious.
Just kidding...
maybe.
I just love all the different things these phones can do...and the million and a half aps you can buy/download/share. It's truly amazing. Bella has found a few aps that she loves. Teach Me Kindergarten comes highly recommended. She works on math, spelling, sight words, and reading. She then earns coins and takes them to the market to purchase fish, rocks, food, and decorations for her digital fish tank.
Talking Tom is also another favorite. It's a really crazy cat the repeats what you say as if he had inhaled helium. The kids love it. You can also feed, pet, and punch him. So weird.
And - want to bake some cookies?! Well you can on the iPhone without all the mess and calories. Nice. CookieDoodle is great for budding bakers who want to try their hand at mixing, baking, decorating and eating cookies. I love cracking the eggs.
(Here is Bella doing some iPhone math. I just love how she counts her fingers. Too cute.)
Sophie's favorite aps are Preschool Adventure, Whimsy Puzzles (of course), ToyStory 3 Matching, and Disney Princess Stickerbook.
Oh...and want to draw a cool picture - with stickers that make cool sounds? You have to get Doodlebuddy.
But as with everything...the iPhone can only hold their attention for so long. But is sure gets me a few extra snoozes in the morning sometimes and can usually get me through a grocery store trip!! Ha ha.
As you can see Sophie lost interest...

But gosh isn't she cute. Want to see this cheeky little face live?! Facetime us!! Ha ha.
As for me...I love
TV Guide, Pandora, SoundHound, My LDS Stake, Facebook, Google, Momento, Price Scanner, Angry Birds (addicting), and the Weather Channel.

Are there any aps (or cool things) you love for the iPhone...please share!

Do your ears hang low...

Something old...something new. Two posts in one day. I think that's a record. Ha ha.
So an old problem we thought we had taken care of - flarred up again this week!
Sophie's ears!
Poor girl has been battling hug ear infections since she was born. About four months ago we did this. Hoping to be rid of the pesky little things. Old habits die hard I guess because this week Sophie's ears were back to their old routines.
High fevers...runny nose...intense inflammation.
We didn't think it was her ears, though. I thought for sure it was the flu. So we waited. Finally after two days we called the doctor. They couldn't get us in. So we waited. Hoping to ride it out. We called again. They couldn't get us in. We waited. We called again. And it went on like this for THREE DAYS!
Finally we'd had enough and switched doctors. Then they found it. Another ear infection. Poor thing had been suffering cause ear aches don't go away while you wait. They get worse.
I felt so bad.
After some antibiotics and extra love - Sophie is finally on the mend!
And she made this little place to relax. So cute. Go ahead Sophie...relax...you deserve it. Poor baby. I'll just take your picture while you do...love you.
Dance Recital
A few months ago...
Yep I can't belive I just started with that...
trying. so. hard. to. catch. up.
I think I can....I think I can...I think I can... this blog updating just never ends! Ha ha.
So we put the girls in dance this year. Real dance with recitals! They practiced...and practiced. (I'm not sure if they ever got "better" but it was sure fun watching them.) Sophie even got in on the action this year. I think she was the youngest in the class - but you would never know it. Growing up as the dance queen a.k.a. Bella's apprentice - she learned the ropes pretty fast. She loves her tap shoes. And I love watching her cute little booty shakin' to the music. Win win. Ha ha.
As the recital approached I tried to coach the girls as to what it was going to be like - "there's going to be a stage"..."and it might be dark"..."lights"..."cameras!!!" I was just a little worried that they would get scared and not want to do it.
But boy was I wrong!
These two girls were born for the stage. Ha ha.
They strutted onto the stage like butterflies who had just found their wings. In fact - Sophie found me out in the audience and yelled, "Mommy! Look! I'm on the stage!!!"
It was too cute. Everyone laughed. I cried.
When the music started they did their little dance - with out any help. It was funny to say the least. But of course, as parents we really don't care what they're doing because we can't get over how cute the are...
especially in those tutus. We all had to make homemade tutus - which I had never done before. I now know why they charge so much for them. They take SO long to make. Ha ha.
Dancing...dancing...dancing...
The end(s). And such cute ends might I add too. Love.
Spring Recital here we come!
